The handle is made of a solid piece of brass, which feels very nice in the hand and has a good weight to it. I would definitely recommend buying the japanese cutter blades with the handle since they fit very well and are incredibly sharp. If you losen the screw you can retract the blade into the handle by pushing the blade in. You can tighten the screw afterwards to prevent the blade from sliding out again. Gravity will do the job if you want to get the blade out of the handle again. This tool is great for accurate cuts around corners and for small details. The brass will get a patina over time (becomes less shiny and more dark, rich golden) but you can always polish it back to looking like new. Although I prefer some patina on my tools as long as they stay in good condition.
