These hollow pricking irons are extraordinary tools, but correct usage is essential. Over time, industry design evolved from making light surface marks for awl piercing to fully punching through leather up to 5–7mm thick. Because modern teeth are thinner and sharper for cleaner cuts, always pull the tool out strictly vertically after striking. Wiggling side-to-side while stuck in the cutting mat exerts heavy lateral pressure, which can easily bend or break outer teeth. Once pulled straight up, the hand-polished teeth release effortlessly from the hide.
