Olivenleder®
Olivenleder® is an innovative German leather tanning technology that uses natural extracts derived from olive tree leaves to produce high-quality, sustainable leather. The tanning agents are obtained from the leaves and branches generated during the regular pruning of olive trees, a necessary process for maintaining healthy trees and ensuring olive oil production. These agricultural by-products would normally be discarded, but through the Olivenleder® process they are transformed into the main natural tanning agent, giving new purpose to what was previously waste and turning it into a valuable resource for leather production.
Instead of relying on chromium salts or synthetic chemicals, Olivenleder® uses plant-based tannins derived from olive leaves and branches. These agricultural by-products, traditionally considered waste, are repurposed to create a biodegradable and renewable tanning agent. The result is a genuine leather that maintains durability, strength and natural beauty while significantly reducing environmental impact.
Leather produced with the Olivenleder® technology is chrome-free, bio-based and compliant with modern international chemical standards, including European REACH regulations. The process has also been independently certified for its environmental and dermatological safety, making it suitable for products that require a high level of skin compatibility.
Beyond its environmental benefits, Olivenleder® leather is appreciated for its soft feel, natural appearance and elegant patina that develops over time. These qualities make it an excellent choice for leathercraft, luxury accessories, bags, small leather goods and other handcrafted items.
At Leather Artisan Lab we carefully select Olivenleder® hides for artisans and makers who value premium materials, innovative tanning technology and responsible production. This leather represents a unique balance between traditional craftsmanship and modern sustainability.
